Demystifying Migrations Strategies from Lync to Skype for Business

I was tweeted the other day from a follower about how to migrate to Skype for Business from Lync 2013 and further searching social media it seems that us Skype for Business consultants / experts or enthusiasts have blogged with all excitement about the new in place upgrade method and somehow, other migration strategies have perhaps been lost in all the hype. Therefore, I thought I would write a quick post on the other migration strategies you can adopt and not talk about in place upgrade at all from this point on.

If you are considering migrating from your existing Lync deployment to Skype for Business then you must consider the precursor environmental requirements before committing yourself.

It should be with no surprise that Microsoft have indeed allowed N -2 native compatibility with Skype for Business. This means you can perform a migration to Skype for Business if you are currently running  Lync 2010 or Lync 2013 within your domain. Native means, that you must not have a mixture of OCS 2007 servers in your OCS 2007 R2 topology, no OCS 2007 R2 servers in your Lync 2010 topology and no Lync 2010 servers in your Lync 2013 topology. All servers in your topology must be running the same version of Lync throughout.

Skype for Business – NEW Differences between Lync 2013 and Skype for Business

How Skype for Business Differs from Lync 2013 (or not)

Today at the Office 365 Summit, Microsoft gave us a sneak peak at some of the new and improved features that Skype for Business will bring to enterprises. The question burning in my mind before this event was is this just a rebranding exercise, or is Skype for Business a brand new, developed from the ground up application? The answer in short is; Lync 2013 Rebranded, with a few (although cool) additions and many bug and failure fixes.

Throughout the course of this document I will try and explain what the differences are, what is new and what Microsoft are and aren’t saying. I will start with a few headliners, the answers to some of the most asked questions surrounding this launch.

Skype for Business – Enabling Bulk Users

During a Lync 2013 install of over 2000 seats I had to enable bulk groups of users for Lync enterprise voice, PC to PC and Remote Call Control together with different pool assignments and policies. I created a script that would read from a user completed CSV file and enable users with the specified policies and pool associations.

The CSV file must have the following column headers and saved as LyncUsers.csv

ADUsername Pool LineUri SipAddress ClientPolicy ConferencePolicy DialPlanpolicy Voicepolicy ExternalAccessPolicy

The LineURI should be in format of tel:+441870123456;ext=987

The SipAddress should be in the format of sip:useralias@domain.com

If policies are not defined the default policies will be applied

For the script this is in a word document as this website does not allow .ps1 files to be uploaded. please copy the script contents to a notepad file and save with the .ps1 extension
